Yoga philosophy

Yoga is not something you merely do, rather it is the state of mind or being that you exist in while doing.  Whether it be Yoga asana (body positions), pranayama (the spreading out of the internal breath), meditation, weight training, dancing, walking on the treadmill or looking into the eyes of the person you love, Yoga can teach us to be more alive, aware and involved in what is going on inside and all around us.

This sensory acuity that is the by-product of the practice of Yoga can be used to identify stress when it invades our bodies, enable us to identify with clarity our emotions and mental states and give us deeper insights to our true nature.  Yoga gives us tools to integrate our mind, body and the power and magic of the human spirit.

On a physical level practicing Yoga asana properly can help relieve LBP (lower back pain), strengthen the core, develop balance and coordination, lengthen, strengthen and tone muscles.  A well balanced asana class can help to safely reintegrate old injuries, relieve stress and tensions and much more.

Many of us engage in yoga seeking physical benefits and soon realize it touches every aspect of our lives.  It challenges our beliefs, strengthens our will, and supports us throughout the joys and sorrows of our daily life.  Through our practice, we find we become kinder to ourselves, more forgiving toward others, and tolerant of our own imperfections.

Inner Strength offers our community the following Yoga class structures:

Standard Flow classes = 90-100 minutes

Standard Slow Flow = 75 minutes (Less Heated)

90 minute Slow Flow= 90-100 minutes

Fundamentals of Flow =60 minutes (Less Heated)

We also offer private yoga instruction, workshops and host special guest teachers throughout the year.  Please contact us for more details.

Please be prepared to stay until the class is finished!  If you need to leave early please let the instructor know and leave before shavasana (final resting pose)

Standard Flow classes tune into the natural flow of breath then begin by gently lengthening and deepening each breath.  Within the length and depth of breath we move our bodies.  Throughout the rise and fall of intensity we learn through practice how to remain with ourselves and in control using ancient breathing techniques.  (pranayama)

Each class offers a series of Asanas or (body postures) that are linked together with the inhale and the exhale.  This repetition of breath and movement brings an element of cardiovascular conditioning to the class increasing the caloric expenditure, improving circulation and safely working the heart.

Our highly skilled teachers offer variations to help safely build the beginner as well as more challenging variations to bring the advanced beginner safely to their edge.  The room is comfortably heated surrounding you like a blanket to gently invite the muscles to supple and elongate.  Over time the muscles retain the length and strengthen.  This "re-integration" helps improve posture and offers the body the space to maintain health.

During the 90 minute flow classes you are taught the art and science of balance as well as an understanding of Yoga philosophy.  The word philosophy comes from the Greek words Philo (love) and Sophy (knowledge).  The love of knowledge or wisdom.  At the ending of each class you are led through guided meditation and relaxation allowing all the stress of the day to melt away.  The process is an internal cleansing.

Standard Slow Flow classes are intense, challenging, relaxing and easily accessible for the total beginner. The slow flow classes are 75 minutes in duration.  By moving slowly we are able to bring deeper connectedness to muscle tissue while challenging our mindfulness to keep the breath even and smooth.  By slowing down you have the chance to savor each movement and cycle deep, smooth, fluid and graceful breath throughout.

Beginners find comfort in trying a Slow Flow class for their first time and love it!  Intermediate and advanced beginners also enjoy the challenge of slowing things down.

75 minute Slow Flow classes are an abbreviated version of the Standard Flow Classes.  90 minute Slow Flow classes move slowly for 90 minutes.  Great for all levels!

Fundamentals of Flow classes are 90 minutes and are for the TOTAL RAW beginner to learn, make mistakes, ask questions and have fun!  The class moves very slowly explaining all the elements of the Standard Flow Class structure including:

Proper breathing

Proper alignment

Balancing postures

Safe transitioning

Body awareness

"I just wanted to let you know that after a month’s worth of classes, I can already notice changes in both my physical appearance as well as my practice.  I really enjoy your classes and look forward to each and every one.  I think what you do at Inner Strength is fabulous.  You provide a very comfortable and friendly atmosphere as well a very informative and challenging one.  I honestly am excited to attend class each week (and I have never been excited about physical activity!).  This is definitely the kind of yoga class I was looking and hoping for!

Thank you for creating such a wonderful environment for peace, learning and happiness!"  -Nicole C.

InnerStrength

thanks again for providing such a great space for yoga and wellness. i've always intended to put this into an email for you and i apologize for not writing it sooner. from the moment i stepped into inner strength (5 months ago) and laid my mat down, i turned to my matt (my sidekick, not yoga mat:) and said "i'm home". i knew in that instant that this would become my haven for yoga... and it turns out for acupuncture too. (i can't say enough good things about matt and his treatments.) each day that i practice i am always greeted with a warm hello from a familiar face and i 've felt like i belonged from beginning. the inner strength staff is SO friendly and knowledgeable, always going the extra mile with a variety of assists and adjustments. in fact, not a week goes by where i don't get some sort of "ah hah" in my practice. this aspect is so important to me, considering i have been practicing for over six years. i also really appreciate the space itself, how the studios are laid out, with two bathrooms and more than enough room for all the practitioners and their belongings. such an important and necessary thing for a yoga studio!! AND the music is the BEST, i can't tell you how much it compliments my practice in more ways than one. in my experience i have found that music can make or break a practice. the yoga teachers at inner strength always make sure that the music is just right and in the "flow" of the class.... such a treasure.
anyhow, i'm sure you must know that i enjoy coming to inner strength considering that i have a annual pass but i thought you might like to know why. thanks again for all your hard work:) see you on the mat, erin
